It was good to get the first game in Division 1 out of the way and bag a win, there were many positives but also things we can improve on, a 3 out of 5 performance from our perspective. The game was pretty tight, 13 all and with 5 minutes to go, some great interplay instigated by Jone led to Pricey screaming through for the winning try.
Our forward pack stood up to the pressure considering we only had 3 starting forwards from last years team. Led by Joey, Pricey and Will, our most experienced players managed and controlled the tempo of the game very well. Jone as always stood out with his athleticism complimented by the straight running Apenisa and our ever reliable hooker, Will Hannan. Our young second rowers were outstanding, Jayde Gray and Michael Parker toiled hard in the row and their work rate was exceptional, they did the little jobs right. Charles Kilby continued to impress as the game wore on. Anthony like Jayde had played a game before hand, his will to keep going especially in the front row is one the club can be proud of. Players that have no problems playing more than the required minutes. One weakness we have in the forwards is our fitness and our defence around the ruck was solid but our support play needs to improve so we don’t turn over possession easily. Set pieces need tightening up.
Pricey stood tall, his passing and snipping around the ruck led to breaks, a key contributor in the win.
Arthur, after playing colts & 2nd grade was brilliant and as the game wore on he got comfortable and started to take control. Joe Vuli delivered with his robust running lines while outside of him, Mesa and Siti didn’t see much ball but defended well enough when traffic came their way. Big Jim and Manasa, hats off to these boys, played 3 games, we could see tiredness creeping in but you both preserved and contributed.
In the backs we have a few things to work on, defensive pattern, communication, passing and attacking the ball in the air….let’s not allow the ball to hit the deck first.
Good start, definitely a performance we can build on.
To the guys that hung around as reserves, we thank you for your commitment.
