Mid Term (Self) Examination

As we near the midpoint of the season, it may be timely to take a look at our progress as a club, both on and off the field. While there have been some encouraging results, we’re still not performing anywhere near where we’d like to be.

The dictionary describes a club as: a group of persons organised for a social, literary, athletic, political, or other purpose

My reasons for quoting this will become clearer later.

I received an email late last week from a very frustrated coach after only 23 players from the entire club turned out for Thursday night training. In summary here were his main points.

  • We have coaches for all grades
  • We provide facilities for training when there is wet weather
  • We provide off season training free of charge and encourage partners to come along
  • We provide numerous social gatherings in and out of rugby season
  • We provide Trainee physios at every game
  • We provide free strapping tape at games and training.
  • More often than not, we provide someone to strap players at training
  • We provide a massage therapist at home games
  • We now provide great communication links informing all members of what is going on
  • We provide free refreshments on bus trips
  • We often provide free refreshments at social occasions
  • The Orchard put $300 on the bar and other members an additional $400 at a recent social event
  • We provide and end of season ball and presentation night
  • I am sure we provide more than the above in fact, I am positive we go above and beyond the normal when it comes to looking after our members.

    I’ve discussed this with the other coaches and members of the committee, and they also express the same sentiments. For the club to be successful, both on and off the field, the players need to do their part. This includes;

  • Turning up to training
  • Ringing your coach if you can’t make training or are unable to play
  • Making yourself available to play on Saturdays
  • Paying your subs on time
  • While we understand that there are from time to time reasons players can’t make training, or can’t play on a Saturday, some of the excuses the coaches are hearing are wearing a bit thin. The coaches and committee feel they are playing their part in providing an environment, both on the field, and socially for the club to thrive, the major thing missing seems to be player commitment. We have an opportunity to turn this around in the second half of the season, but it will take you, the players to make this happen. We’ve recently added a Player Expectations page to the website, this outlines what the club expects of us all, please make yourself familiar with these expectations.

At the end of the day, we all put our name forward either to play, coach or serve the club, so we all have responsibility to deliver.

    Veterans and Sponsors Day

Veterans & Sponsors Day Saturday 19th of June 2010
    Bert Oldfield Oval, Killara Park

Saturday 19th of June is Brothers Rugby Club’s annual Veterans Day. Take this opportunity to catch up with your old mates from CBOB’s at the rugby from Midday on Saturday 19th of June.

Brothers have a temporary new home this year while Roseville Chase Oval undergoes massive ground improvements. Brothers will play all our home games at the salubrious location of
Bert Oldfield Oval, Killara Park. It’s a great venue for rugby!

Come and support your club when Brothers do battle with UWS – Hawkesbury Ag. With the 4th Grade “Veterans” currently sitting in second place on the ladder, it will undoubtedly be a great way to start the afternoon off. It is also rumoured that some of the “legends” of the 1980’s and 1990’s will be “donning” the boots for this special occasion.

Following 1st Grade we will adjourn to the Orchard Tavern in Chatswood for Dinner and Drinks. So, if you can’t make the games, you can catch up at the Orchard!

With 4 grades of top quality of rugby to watch, cold beer and the best steak sandwich in town, where else would you rather be?

Please pass the word to all your mates, bring your family and your friends.

See you on the 19th June!

    President’s Announcement

Dear Players, Veterans and Friends of Brothers,

A few weeks ago the Ku-ring-gai Council informed us that Roseville Chase would be closed as of 3rd May this year for a major ground upgrade that will take the entire season to complete. As you can appreciate this presents some challenges for the committee and what we are working on for the coming season.

However, the committee is not going to let this affect our plans and we have been working towards a solution with the council. To date we have secured a game day ground at Killara Park/Bert Oldfield (Koola Avenue, Killara), this ground provides good facilities commensurate with what we have at Roseville. Unfortunately, the ground at Killara doesn’t have lights, which means we can’t use it for training nights.
Therefore the training ground will be Wellington Park, Lindfield.
Please see the Google maps below for the locations and directions of the 2 grounds. Training will commence at Wellington Park from Tuesday the 4th May and the first Home game at Killara Park will be on the 15th May.

Whilst a change of venue isn’t ideal preparation for the season, the work required on Roseville Chase Oval is desperately needed and is an investment in our future as a Rugby Club.
It needs to be acknowledged that while the ground upgrade is out of our control, our attitude and response to the challenge is in our control. I would like to think that as a club this draws out the best in us, so that season 2010 will still be the success that everyone involved in the club has been working towards.

We will return to Roseville Chase for pre-season training in 2011

I’ve included a list of the works that will take place at Roseville while it is closed, as you can see, it’s quite comprehensive, and will deliver a much better facility for the future. The upgrades will certainly assist during wet weather, ensuring the ground remains available more often during the coming seasons.

If you have any questions please feel free to email or talk to one of the committee members at training

    Regards,

    Scott James
