2021 – Round 6 Roundup

We had a disruptive warm-up but thankfully our men got out to a great start. We were always the better team and it was going to come down to how we choose to play, unstructured push passes or structured phase plays. The first 20 minutes we kept well to our structure, it allowed us possession and territory which we quickly converted to points. Paula Tuivawa opened our account with a pick and go from the base from the scrum 5 metres out. Not long after, Stuart Raines knowing we had advantage to play with, kicked wide for our wingers but the bounce found Jusdys Te Whare who strolled through for our second.

For our third, we had good build-up working on the back of our Pistons, forwards holding width on the blindside for Clay Henry to break through, keeping the ball alive for our latest league recruit Kurt Warren to score his first for Brothers. Again we repeated the same forward play that saw us working within striking distance, a great cut out pass from Hayden Toohey towards the short side, found Braydon Lenz as he fell over the try line to increase our lead.

4 tries – then we went away from what was working, we started to push a lot of passes post contact and in traffic. Possession the opposition gladly took as they were getting starved off it. The opposition got back into the game on the back end of the first half, through the Big Three “no no’s”, turnover / missed tackles and penalties. They strike back with 3 tries and 2 conversions to cut our lead to 5.

The second half saw a back and forth game to see who was going to break first. We were dealing with an opposition that just won’t go away especially playing at their home ground. In the end, our men finally put them to the sword by scoring two tries through Alex Roch and Chris Royle.

1 Point – Kurt Warren first game playing rugby, didn’t let the team down. Scored a try on debut.
